ADDICTION

Use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs can start a process called an addiction.  Drug addiction includes a craving for the drug and taking action to obtain and use the drug despite negative consequences. Increased tolerance becomes part of an addiction when larger amounts of the drug are required to achieve the same effect. When an addictive drug is stopped, withdrawal symptoms almost always follow. Some believe that addiction goes beyond a user's voluntary control and becomes a “disease.” A person who is addicted is typically called an addict or alcoholic. Not everyone who uses tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs becomes addicted. For pornography addiction see Pornography.
