No one is immune from the challenges in this life. When social or emotional challenges arise, help is available. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Family Services (LDS Family Services) provides counseling and resources. LDS Family Services has 55 offices throughout the United States and nine international offices in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan available to provide counseling services to individuals, couples, and families. The professional counseling staff hold a master's degree in the behavioral sciences at a minimum. There are two important resources available through LDS Family Services. These are professional counseling and Addiction Recovery Program (ARP).
Professional counseling can assist members in a variety of situations. Common reasons for counseling include, but are not limited to, marital conflict, parent-child conflict, addiction, abuse, depression, anxiety, and same-gender attraction. Working with the member and the member's bishop is often helpful in changing destructive behaviors and creating healthier relationships. A bishop and member can often determine together if professional counseling might be helpful. To receive counseling services, members must have a referral from their bishop or branch president. There is a fee for professional counseling services.
ARP groups are sponsored by LDS Family Services and are located throughout the U.S. Weekly meetings are held in LDS facilities. The groups are facilitated by local LDS Family Services' Missionaries. There is no fee for these services a referral from a local LDS priesthood leader is not required. Doug LeCheminant is the contact person at LDS Family Services headquarters in Salt Lake.
