The following is a checklist for caregivers wanting to help an individual with an alcohol or drug problem.  The primary goal is to stabilize the problem as much as possible while seeking agreement from the individual concerned to admit to the problem and to agree to steps that will lead to abstinence from the alcohol or other drug of choice. In cases where the alcohol or drug problem is more severe caregivers should also facilitate the individual concerned to seek and accept professional help. Most people believe that alcohol or other drug addiction is a progressive disease and will get worse without help. Therefore, do not leave the individual concerned or his/her family without support. Recovering from addiction can be a lengthy process, caregivers should continue to follow-up with contact and continue in confrontation and support.
